Viennese New Year
ASSEMBLY HALL, WORTHING
Sunday 5 January 2025
2:45 pm
Conductor: JOHN GIBBONS
Leader: JULIAN LEAPER
Join Worthing’s professional orchestra for their annual foot-stomping, hand-clapping, finger-tapping celebration to herald in the New Year!
A concert to banish the gloom of winter in a feast of uplifting tunes, the New Year concert is an upbeat, joyous event featuring the music of the Strauss family and their contemporaries.
The New Year Concert is traditionally Viennese in flavour - featuring all those familiar waltzes, marches and polkas - although Music Director John Gibbons is partial to adding a few surprise ingredients to the musical menu!
In the ballrooms of Vienna in the 19th century, if you heard a waltz it was likely written by a member of the Strauss family - either the father Johann, or one of his three sons
- Johann Jr., Josef or Eduard. The work of the Strauss family has been called ‘light music’ and it will certainly lighten the mood and put a smile on your face, but there is nothing light about the sheer volume of music they produced.
Favourites include The Blue Danube Waltz, Thunder and Lightning Polka, Radetzky March and more!
So, join us for a wonderful afternoon of live orchestral music to welcome 2025.
