FAQ's

What should I wear to an orchestra concert?
WSO has no dress code for our concerts. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable!

How long does the concert last?
Most concerts last around 1½–2½ hours, including a 30 minute interval. The exact running time will be listed in our concert programmes.

When should I arrive?
We recommend arriving 20–30 minutes before the advertised start time to allow time for parking, collecting tickets, finding your seat and settling in. The Assembly Hall will open one hour before the start time with the auditorium doors opening 30 minutes before the start time.

What happens if I arrive late?
For the comfort of performers and audience members, latecomers may be asked to wait until a suitable break before entering the auditorium.

Where should I sit?
Every seat offers a different experience. Seats near the centre generally provide excellent overall balance, while seats closer to the stage can offer a more immediate view of the performers. For the best view of a piano soloist, we recommend the left hand side.

Can children attend?
Absolutely! We believe that orchestral music is for all and young people are very welcome. We offer a free children's workshop that runs alongside our main season concerts if parents feel that is a more suitable option.

Do I need to know anything about classical music?
Not at all! Our concerts are for everyone, from first-time concertgoers to experienced classical music enthusiasts. We offer music appreciation session through our friends at the Worthing Symphony Society. These sessions will talk about the composers, the music and offer a change to have some further listening.

Will there be an interval?
All concerts include a 30 minute interval. This provides an opportunity to stretch your legs, enjoy refreshments and discuss the first half of the programme.

Can I buy refreshments at the venue?
All concerts at the Worthing Assembly Hall offer refreshments before the concert starts and during the interval.

Can I take photographs or record the concert?
Photography and recording policies vary. Please follow the venue’s instructions and, unless specifically permitted, do not make recordings during the performance.

Should I switch off my mobile phone?
Please switch your phone to silent or, ideally, turn it off before the performance begins. Even a small notification can be surprisingly audible in a concert hall!

Can I leave during the performance?
Yes, if necessary, but please try to leave during a natural break in the music to minimise disruption to performers and other audience members.

What happens if I lose my ticket?
Contact the WTM box
office on 01903 206206 as soon as possible. They will advise you on what to do.

Can I buy tickets on the day?
Subject to availability, tickets may be available on the day. However, booking in advance is recommended. Tickets on the day will be available online at wtm.uk/wso or at the box office at the Worthing Assembly Hall, which will open one hour before the start of the performance.

Are there concessions or discounted tickets?
We are proud to offer £6 tickets for all under-26's!

Is the venue accessible?
Yes, the venue is fully wheelchair accessible, for more accessibility information, please visit wtm.uk/access.

Is there parking available?
Parking is free on Stoke Abbott Road on Sundays, additionally, the Civic Quarter Car Park is just opposite the Assembly Hall.

What happens if I have forgotten my ticket?
Don't panic! The box office may be able to locate your booking using your name or booking reference.

What is a concert programme?
The programme lists the music being performed and usually provides information about the composers, works, musicians, soloists and conductor. All WSO concert programmes are £3.

Will there be a conductor?
Most orchestral concerts feature a conductor who leads the orchestra and shapes the interpretation of the music. Some performances, particularly chamber or smaller-scale concerts, may be conducted from within the ensemble.

What does the conductor actually do?
The conductor communicates tempo, character, dynamics, phrasing and coordination to the musicians, helping the entire orchestra perform as one ensemble.

What instruments are in a professional orchestra?
A symphony orchestra typically includes strings, woodwind, brass and percussion, although the exact instrumentation varies according to the repertoire.

Why does the orchestra tune before the concert?
The oboe normally sounds the tuning note, allowing the musicians to adjust their instruments so that the orchestra is accurately in tune before the performance begins.

When should I clap?
If you're unsure, simply follow the audience! Programme notes may also indicate how many movements a work has. There is no need to worry about getting it wrong - we always appreciate an applause!

What if I don't understand the music?
That's perfectly fine. There is no right or wrong way to experience a concert. You can simply listen and enjoy the sound, atmosphere and performance. WSO is for all and our aim is for each individual to experience it as they prefer.

I've never been to an orchestra concert before — will I feel out of place?
